International Conference on Agricultural Transformation, Food Security and Nutrition in Central Asia Featuring IFPRI’s 2019 Global Food Policy Report

The International Conference on Agricultural Transformation, Food Security and Nutrition in Central Asia Featuring IFPRI’s 2019 Global Food Policy Report will take place on May 31, 2019, at Westminster International University in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The conference is organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan (MOA), the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT). Financial support for the conference is provided by the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation.

Dr. Shenggen Fan, Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute, will present the 2019 Global Food Policy Report, IFPRI’s flagship report which provides a comprehensive worldwide review of the major food policy developments of the past year and highlights near-term challenges and opportunities. This year, the report explores the potential of rural revitalization to improve livelihoods and meet the Sustainable Development Goals. The conference will focus on policy challenges, issues, and research priorities related to emerging issues in agricultural modernization, food security, and nutrition transition in Central Asia.

Panelists in the discussion include Dr. Simeon Ehui, Director of Agriculture Global Practice at the World Bank, Ms. Cindy Malvicini, ADB Country Director for Uzbekistan and Prof. Tursun Shadiev, Professor at the WIUT. The panel will provide feedback on the Report from the perspectives of rural employment and livelihoods, agricultural modernization, and the role of advanced technologies and renewable energy in agricultural development in Uzbekistan and beyond.

The event will bring together country and regional stakeholders from the research, government, and donor communities to exchange knowledge, share ongoing research efforts, and identify gaps for improvement and future research. Participants will discuss policy and research priorities related to food and nutrition security in the region.
